Regionals FAQs Page

Regionals is a tournament to determine a school's qualification to play at the State Tournament. Listed are the frequently asked questions.

Participants

There are rules and regulations in regards to who can and cannot play, as wel as

AAA Eligibility

  • All players who participate in the Spring Regional Tournament must have a minimum of a 2.0 GPA from the Fall semester.

  • Players cannot have received a suspension/expulsion during the current school year.

  • All coaches/sponsors that bring students to a Regional Tournament must have a roster of all of their players for Regional & State that is signed by their administrator and the coach/sponsor.

    • Once an AAA Eligibility form has been turned in, no other students can be added to the roster.

Number of Players Per School

Each school can play a total of eight (8) players during each round. If a school has more than eight (8) players, they will have to inform the Tournament Director of their substitutions in between rounds. If a substitution is not made prior to the pairings list being published, the Tournament Director has the right to deny the change for that round.

Scoring Wins and Loses

For every win a player has, they will receive one (1) point. A loss will result in no (0) points, and a draw will equal a half (0.5) point. The most points a student can receive is five (5), which equals the number of rounds that the Regional Tournament has.

Overall School Score

After the fifth (5th) round is over, the Tournament Director will use the computer software to organize the players from each school, to show the number of total points per student. The four (4) best players will then count toward their school's final points.

Example of a School's Score

School A
Jane Doe (3,2)
John Doe (4,1)
Jane Deer (5,0)
John Deer (1,4)
Guy Dear (3.5,1.5)
Lady Dough (0,5)

(Win,Loss)

When you see the two numbers next to each other, it should reflect the number of games a player has won/lost in a total of 5 rounds. You take the wins from the four (4) players that have the most wins, and that will be the school's overall score.

Team A's top four (4) boards:

  1. Jane Deer (5,0)

  2. John Doe (4,1)

  3. Guy Dear (3.5, 1.5)

  4. Jane Doe (3,2)

Total points for Team A: 15.5

Who moves on to State, and when will I know?
  • All Regional Tournaments must be completed prior to the announcement about who moves on to state.

  • The number of 1A-3A and 4A-7A schools has to be determined, and the data is used to take into consideration the number of teams allowed to go to State.

    • To make things even, CAAS tries to have the same number of schools in each division.

  • The number of players on a team must be calculated for the teams that are potentially able to go to State.

    • In some situations, there have been some Regional winners that have won with only two (2) players on their team. However, as State is scored differently, it is required that there be at least three (3) players for each team to ensure that there is a possibility of winning a round.

The teams that move forward to State will be given an email to inform them of their eligibility. Once all schools have been informed, there will be a public announcement of who is able to go to State.
